(Hope Education Altering Lives)
Project HEAL is our parish-based NGO providing fully functional counseling services and other programs for students of St. Martin de Porres Primary School. Services provided through Project HEAL include a wide variety of preventive, curative, psycho-educational, and enrichment activities.
The students of St. Martin's Primary School have often faced a great deal of trauma in their young lives--street and domestic violence, poverty, absentee parents. Virtually everyone of our students has a family member or friend who has suffered murder or other serious injury as a result of this violence. Over 70 students receive counseling services from the Project HEAL, with another 50 on the wait list. Project HEAL has two full-time counselors on staff and use psycho-social therapeutic techniques, particularly play therapy, in treating our students.
In September 2013, Project HEAL launched a literacy program called Heal Academy. Today, Heal Academy provides St. Martins students with after-school remedial literacy and math education as well as opportunities for enrichment and personal growth, from art to yoga classes to robotics.
